SYNOPSIS

COMEDY-SOCIAL DRAMA

After surviving a cancer scare, Diana Polifilo (Peg Allen), a 55 year-old architect living alone in Nashville, Tennessee decides to hit the road with her van and a pop-up camper.  Wanting company, she puts an ad in the newspaper.

Kate McAllister (Cinda McCain), in her 40s, is a frustrated mom with a stalled acting career when she gets locked out of the house as she retrieves the morning paper.  She needs a break, yet has to get to the coast and retrieve her children from an irresponsible ex-husband.

Elizabeth Benson Carter (Marjorie Crump-Shears), 60, is desperate to get an heirloom cradle to her daughter in California before the birth of her first grandchild.  When her old Mercedes breaks down, Bennie almost looses her sense of humor. She reads Diana’s ad in the newspaper and makes a call.

Wondering what they have in common, they decide to make the trip together.  Packing proves to be the first obstacle the women face, their sense of direction, different food preferences and little or no camping experience complicates things further.

Initially relating on a surface level, the three find much to laugh about as they discuss divorce, relationships, menstruation, retirement and even what pleases them in bed.

Leaving from Nashville, stopping at the “baths” in Hot Springs, moving on to the Southwest, a more intimate side of their history emerges…memories of their introduction to sex are tapped.  They each re-live the experience in flashbacks to the 50s and 60s, when Diana is a student architect, Bennie faces motherhood and Kate is a working actor.

When the deeper truth is reveled, it becomes apparent that this first sex, first love influenced much of their life and that in the eyes of a righteous culture, all three of them would be viewed as “immoral”…labeled as a witch, a dyke, a slut.

In the end the travelers, who bond together through telling their stories, symbolically toss parts of the difficult, lonely past into a bay near the Pacific Ocean.
