Location Recording & Mixing is the process of capturing the sound on the set of your TV or Film Production. Dialog, sound effects, room tone, and ambient sounds are all key elements with in the production and have to be captured correctly the fist time. This is definitely the case when you are working on a project with a limited post budget. Dialog is the most important part of your project. Dialog is what tells the story. Your audience must be able to understand what is being said in order to connect with the action on the screen. During dialog editing we focus on the dialog and make it be the best it can be. We have lots of tricks of the trade for this, such as reducing unwanted noise or adding reverb to blend two different scenes. Our end goal is to make an even and consistent dialog track. If we do our job here hopefully no one will notice…

Music Editing

During music editing we work with the composer, music supervisor, soundtrack mixer, and arranger to create the musical landscape for Film or TV show. We focus on music placement within the project and work with editors to document the changes made to placed music so that the songwriters and artists can get compensated for their contributions.

Sound Meets Design

A sound designer is responsible for placing all of the elements into the film. From effects, dialog, production audio and sometimes music, all of the audio is mixed (sometimes by another mixer) to create the final audio track for the project.

Sweetening

This is the video equivalent to audio mastering. It usually involves working with “stem mixes” or subgroups like dialog, music tracks and sound effects. Setting the overall levels and making sure that the program is ready for broadcast. Many times this can be done onsite at the editor’s post sweet in as little as an hour! We have a mobile/portable setup that allows us to work on your project at your office and still take advantage of our software tools, plugins and (more importantly) our expertise.

ADR

Automated dialog replacement or additional dialog recording allows the dialog to be clearly heard over what may sometimes be less than desirable conditions during production. ADR might be used if there is a generator running in the background or some unwanted background noise that detracts from the message or feeling that the actor is trying to convey. Nothing says “I’ll promise to love you forever” like a two civil war era characters with a commercial jet flying overhead during their lines (yes, this actually happened).

Soundtrack Production

This is an unnoticed art form. Were you good at making mix tapes as a kid? Can you appreciate the way one song flows into the next? Soundtrack production takes this to another level. Working with the director and music supervisor/editor to find the perfect song to compliment an onscreen montage or the credit role takes an understanding of how to blend the visual with the powerful emotion that a song can convey.

Surround Sound

HD Video = Surround Sound. These two technologies were paired together since birth. All of the marketing that makes HD Video great also applies to the excitement of listening to content mixed in surround. Surround brings a significant boost to that magical term “production value.” It can be much more subtle that things exploding on screen and flying past you in a blockbuster action movie. Surround puts the viewer into the onscreen environment. It can direct them where to look and reenforce visual cues. Surround sound music also increases the emotion of the scene.

Foley

Foley is the art of recreating the sound environment that you see on the screen… From footsteps, to traffic noises, woodland creatures and other not so friendly monsters, Foley blends in with sound design to “sell the scene” to the viewer. It is important that the viewer feels like they are a part of what’s happening on the screen. People are used to taking cues and interacting with sounds in the real world and it stands to reason that they should interact with sounds on screen as well. Foley brings a scene to life…
